Overview
The Student Experience Handbook was created as an orientation-week publication designed to help students navigate campus resources, schedules, and important information in a more interactive and approachable way. Previous handbooks were often treated as disposable informational booklets, so the goal was to redesign the experience into something students would feel encouraged to keep, personalize, and actively use throughout the school year.
Inspired by the visual language of the flat lay viewbook campaign, the booklet combined illustrated flat lay elements, expressive layouts, and customizable spaces to create a cohesive and engaging extension of the school’s brand identity.
Objective
The objective was to redesign the traditional student handbook into a more memorable and interactive experience that encouraged participation, creativity, and personalization. The publication needed to communicate important student resources and schedules clearly while also feeling visually exciting, approachable, and reflective of the creative culture of the school.
Design Approach
Drawing inspiration from the flat lay editorial campaign, I developed a playful visual system built around illustrated objects, layered compositions, and expressive layouts to create continuity across student-facing materials. To increase engagement and reduce the likelihood of the booklet being discarded, I incorporated customizable spaces for notes, reflections, and personal organization alongside colouring mandalas and interactive elements.
The final design balanced functionality with creativity, transforming informational content into a more immersive and human-centered experience that reflected the energy and individuality of student life.
