Overview
Tools of Creativity was a recruitment-focused editorial publication designed to create a more approachable and authentic representation of the creative school experience. After recognizing that previous viewbooks primarily showcased highly polished final artwork — which could feel intimidating to prospective students — the visual direction shifted toward highlighting the creative process behind the work instead.
By focusing on experimentation, hands-on making, and students actively creating, the publication aimed to reassure future students that growth, exploration, and learning are essential parts of the artistic journey.
Objective
The goal was to design a viewbook that emotionally connected with prospective students by showcasing the human side of creativity rather than only polished final outcomes. The publication needed to feel expressive, immersive, and inspiring while creating a more welcoming and relatable introduction to the school environment.
Design Approach
Inspired by the theme of tools and the physical process of making art, the visual direction combined documentary-style photography, handwritten elements, and dynamic editorial layouts. I participated in behind-the-scenes photography sessions and helped shape imagery focused on hands, materials, and students actively creating work to capture the authentic atmosphere of the school.
The final system balanced expressive visual storytelling with clean typography and structured layouts, creating a publication that felt energetic, approachable, and reflective of the organized chaos of art school life.
